County is rich in Indian history. It was meeting place for the Upper and Lower Creek Indians. It is named for the village that stood within the present city limits, Talatiga, which means "Bordertown". Chief Tuscaloosa, Alexander McGillivray. Red Eagle, William McIntosh, Manawa, Big Warrior and Chief Talisi, were a few of the county's noted visitors. The tribe living in this area was called the Talladegas. De Soto Spent July and Aug. 1540 in county.
