Samuel Wilson died at Troy, N.Y., buly 31, 1844.
From him the United States derived the name "Uncle Sam
In the War of 1812, he was a contractor for supplying the
Army with beef and pork. He had long been known
as Uncle Sam, to distinguish him from his brother
Edward, who was by everybody called Uncle Ned.
The brand upon his barrels for the Army was, of course,
U.S. The transition from United States to "Uncle Sam"
was to easy that it was at once made, and the name
Transferred to the Government, and became familiar,
of the U.S. provisions was immediately
not only throughout the Army but the whole
country.
