The county court house occupies a
square, bounded by Oak and Locust
Streets, Missouri Avenue and Fifth
Street. It was completed in 1891 and
cost approximately ½ million dollars.
It is of massive construction, with walls
of grey stone. Originally Independence,
twelve miles east of Kansas City, was
the county seat. Although Kansas
City's growth demanded the removal of
the courts to its limits, the court house
at Independence was never removed. As
a consequence Jackson County has prac-
tically two county seats. All of the
county officials have their headquarters
in the Kansas City building.
