COVERED BRIDGE
THETFORD CENTER, VERMONT
Many and varied are the reasons advanced for the
covering on these old bridges. Although there are
innumerable explanations, the most logical is the
economic one. Unprotected wood decays rapidly, and
the early settlers found that the life of these river
crossings was lengthened by putting a covering on
and keeping the vital timbers dry. In this manner,
moisture could not lodge in the wood.
