The Great Montana Earthquake
Additional Details:
Visitors view some of the tremendous damage inflicted by Montana's great earthquake of August 1959, when a mountain split open, damming the Madison Canyon and creating a new lake now known as Quake Lake. Huge Dolomite boulders as shown on left spewed from the earth-splitting explosion, causing untold damage to life and land. Thousands of travelers yearly visit this geological phenomenon in one of Montana's most scenic areas.
