Additional Details:
Funchal, capital of Madeira, is a city where the streets are so steep that wheeled vehicles are rarely used, sledges pulled by oxen being safe substitutes. Here, Columbus came twenty years before he discovered America and was married to Menina Percatrello, a mariner's daughter. He got his first knowledge of a sailor's life from his father-in-law. It was from papers picked up here from a shipwrecked crew that he got his ideas of the lands across the seas.
