The beautiful city of Washington was designed
and laid out by that eminent French visionary Major
Pierre Charles L'Enfant who was engaged by George
Washington for this purpose. The cornerstone of
the first public building was laid in 1792 and eight
years later on June 11. 1800, Congress, President
Adams and the Supreme Court moved from the
old Capitol at Philadelphia to the still unfinished
Washington on the Potomac,
