Dear
NET
We visited this plant in Lewiston, Idaho,
today. It is the largest pine sawmill in the
world, capable of cutting about 400,000 board
feet of Idaho White Pine every eight hours.
This company manufactures the famous Weyer-
haeuser 4 Square exact length lumber, also
Western Red Cedar Poles, and Pres-to-logs, a
new wood fuel made of clean, dry shavings.
We are told that Potlatch Forests Inc., is a
"tree farming“ operation, cutting only the
large, mature trees for lumber and leaving
the smaller ones to grow for another “crop.
Lewiston is a city of 12,000 and the site of
the State Normal School. The plant we saw
employs 900 men and with its logging opera-
tions has a payroll of about $2,500,000 a year.
