South Hall, built at a cost of $4,000,000 and
opened in 1934, is the gift of Edward S. Hark-
ness. Dr. Butler, President of Columbia Uni. O
versity, describes the building as a "labora.
tory library, designed not merely for the
storage and distribution of books, but for con-
stant working with books." The exterior is
designed in Italian Renaissance style with
fourteen Ionic columns on the north facade.
Present accommodations are for 3,000,000
volumes.
