BREAKER BOYS AT WORK. The first task of the
little fellow who enters the mine to work is that of a breaker
boy. In the dark and dusty screen room he sits on a hard
bench built across a long chute, through which passes a steady
stream of broken coal, and from which he picks out the pieces
of slate or rock.
