Under this Giant Redwood the "Palo Alto"
Nov. 6th to 11th, 1769--camped Portola and
his band—the expedition that discovered San
Francisco Bay. This was the assembling point
for their reconnoitering parties. Other early
explorers—De Anza, Vancover also used the
tree as a landmark. Earlier, Indians held
their council meetings here.
