First Capitol of Indiana Territory and District of Louisiana
Additional Details:
Thousands every year visit this building where the first Indiana laws were enacted. This building was occupied by the Territorial Government and was situated on the south side of Main Street midway between Second and Third Street. About 100 years ago it was moved to Third Street near Harrison Park and used as a residence. In 1919 the Fortnightly Club of Vincennes, through public donation, purchased the building and moved it to its present site in Harrison Park where it now stands restored in its original condition. The upper floor was the meeting place of the legislative body and the lower was occupied by the governor and the secretary of the Territory. Curt Teich & Co. |
