VIEW OF GROUNDS- HAMPTON INSTITUTE. The Hamp-
ton Institute was opened in April, 1868, under the auspices
of the American Missionary Association, with Gen. S. C. Armstrong
in charge. In 1876 it was chartered by a special act of the
General Assembly of Virginia, and thus became independent
of church organization; its doors are open to Indian pupils
and the children of ex-slaves.
