Around 90 miles from Grangeville, reached by way of the scenic South Fork of the Clearwater River. Gold was first discovered in Dixie Gulch in 1862. The town was laidout and the post office established in 1896. The Thunder Mountain Gold-rush in 1902 brought 2,000 old-time "opportunists" to work in the area for a short time.
