REASON
why intercusping teeth must be modified
NÂș 2
TO PROVIDE FOR
NORMAL SETTLING
All dentures do some settling. We can't get away from that, but we
can modify the teeth so that when they do settle, there won't be any bad
results.
Notice the top picture. It illustrates a case correctly constructed of
intercusping posteriors in which centric occlusion of the teeth is associ-
ated with centric jaw relation. Notice that each tooth makes contact with
two opposing teeth; the points of the cusp rest fairly in the opposite
embrasures; the wedging of each inclined plane is balanced by one in
the opposite direction. In other words, pressure applied to the bases
would not cause any shifting of either denture. This is the condition when
dentures are first constructed.
Now look at the bottom picture and see what happens after some absorp-
tion or settling has taken place.
Notice that centric occlusion has
been completely lost. The "gears
are out of mesh." As a result, the
inclined planes of the lowers meet
the inclined planes of the uppers in
such manner as to cause move-
ment of one or both bases. This,
as every dentist knows, is a con-
stant source of annoyance to the
patient.
