The Athenaeum was incorporated March
6th, 1810. Its character and objects are in
many respects like those of the Boston Athe-
naeum. It was the outgrowth of the Social Lib-
rary of 1760 and of the Philosophical Library of
1781, the nucleus of which was a collection of
scientific books captured in the Irish Channel
by Capt. Hill, the privateersman.
