why intercusping teeth must be modified
TO REDUCE THE EFFECTS OF LATERAL THRUST!
In an artificial denture made with
intercusping posteriors, lateral mastica-
ting forces frequently cause soreness.
Here's the reason for that. A full upper
and lower denture is held in place
merely by adhesion to the tissue and
the cohesion of a film of saliva.
As the mandible moves into working
position and grips a bolus of food, the
teeth are driven through the bolus, the mandible returns to centric position
and the food is crushed between the buccal cusp of the lower and the
lingual cusp of the upper.
This produces lateral and vertical masticating forces which combine to
form the resultant masticating force indicated by the long arrow. The
upper ridge and palate take up the lateral masticating force because of
the large area, but the lower one often suffers at the point indicated by
the small arrow. In natural teeth, these lateral masticating forces are taken
up by the sockets and not transmitted to the other side of the mouth.
Our new technic booklet shows how in Dr. French's Modified Posteriors
the effects of these lateral masticating forces have been reduced to an
absolute minimum. If you haven't yet received a copy, write for it today.
