Bishop is the largest town in the Owens Valley, and the chief business center of the area. Tungsten is mined in the area, sportsmen know it as a gateway for the hunting and camping country. Bishop was named after Bishop Creek which in turn was named after Sam A. Bishop, a Fort Tejon stockman, who drove the first herd of cattle into the valley in 1861. Bishop built two rough pine cabins on his St. Francis Ranch that was besieged by Paiutes during the Indian uprisings of the 1860's. By 1863 settlers came into the valley in increasing numbers, and the village sprang up 3 miles northeast of Bishop's ranch. The Paiute is among the most primitive of American Indians.
