SONORA, CALIFORNIA
Sonora was known as Sonorian Camp in 1848 when
it was settled by Mexicans from Sonora, Mexico. A
town government was organized in November to
build a hospital to treat half the population who
were dieing of scurvy. By 1849 there were as many
as 5,000 miners on the streets on Saturday night. In
June of 1850 the "gringo" government placed a
$20.00 tax on every foreign-born miner. The Mexi-
cans and Chileans went to Columbia where larger
strikes were found. Judge Sullivan had the Sonora's
acquisitive instinct when he collected three ounces of
gold from a Mexican defendant for stealing a Mr.
Smith's leggings, one ounce from Smith for bothering
the judge with such a small complaint. Another time
a very wealthy man hailed a penniless man into
court for stealing a mule. The judge decreed that the
wealthy man should pay both fine and court costs,
after all the judge could not be expected to sit with-
out remuneration . . . M.P.
