Myrtle Beach is so tempered by the Gulf
Stream, which rolls ever northward a few miles
off the coast, that it averaged 14° cooler in
summer and proportionately warmer in winter
than adjacent areas. Originally this locality was
known as Long Bay, but took the name Myrtle
Beach because of the luxuriant growth of
evergreen myrtle.
