THE “CLERMONT” Invented by Robert Fulton;
built 1807. Length 133 ft., width 18 ft., depth of hull
9 ft., drawing 2 ft. of water, had two masts, one stack,
two cabins, uncovered paddlewheels. For fuel he used
pine wood, which poured forth volumes of smoke in
the day and showers of sparks at night, filling the
minds of onlookers with apprehensive calamities. De-
parture on memorial trip to Albany, Aug. 11, 1807.
Developed speed, five miles per hour.
