Jiccarilla Apaches. The strange misnomer of
"Indians" for the aborigines of North America
dates back to a letter written by Columbus in
1493, soon after the discovery of the New World.
He believed, as did the people of his time, that
the land he had discovered by sailing westward
across the Atlantic was really a part of India.
The Apaches are nomadic tribes in New Mexico,
Arizona and elsewhere.
