SITTING BULL
A noted Sioux chief and medicine man born
on Grand River, S. D., in 1834. He accompanied
his father on the warpath against the Crows
when only 14 years old, and counted his first
coup on the body of a fallen enemy. He rapidly
gained influence in his own band, and was at
war with various tribes from 1869 to 1876. His
refusal to go upon a reservation finally led to
the Battle of the Little Big Horn, or Custer
massacre. During the battle, Sitting Bull was
in the hills making medicine. But his pre-
diction of the outcome gained
gained him greater
honor than if he had been present. He later
surrendered but never was reconciled to the
reservation. He was arrested in connection
with the ghost dance in 1890, and later was
killed in an attempt to escape.
