command. He later stated that he escaped in
the dust, smoke and turmoil of battle by dis-
guising himself as a Sioux. He made his way
down the Little Big Horn to its junction with
the Big Horn River, and reported to the com-
mander of the supply ship, "Far West," that
the battle had been fought and all the whites
killed. He was born in 1857 and died in 1923.
