A noted Sioux chief, born on the Cheyenne River in North Dakota in 1835. Died at Standing Rock Reservation in 1905. He took active part in the Fetterman massacre in 1866, and was continually at war with neighboring tribes and with the Whites until 1872. He was arrested in 1873 by Col. Tom Custer for killing a surgeon and a trader. Was imprisoned for a time, but released by his guard to join Sitting Bull, declaring that he would cut out the heart of Tom Custer and eat it. He was a leader in the Battle of Little Big Horn and it was said that he personally killed Gen. George A. Custer.
