Series 13989 All the turquoise worn by the Southwestern tribes in their wampum necklaces, ear-rings, etc., is drilled with a hand drill. It is believed that the more primitive method of drilling was with a single flint pointed stick, revolved between the hands, but the drill illustrated, although primitive, has been used for centuries. Turquoise is the only stone valued by the Indians and practically all of the turquoise obtained by the various tribes has been sold or traded to them by the Santo Domingo Indians, near whose village the mines are.
