Bridgeport became the county seat of Mono County (Mono
may be a corruption of Monache, a name once applied to the
Indians of the region) after the seat in Aurora was found to
be in Nevada. The papers were hurriedly transferred to a tiny
roadside camp that became Bridgeport. The town grew pros-
perous in the days when gold was plentiful. While the mines
have gone, farming and tourist patronage has kept the town
very much alive. Bodie State Historic Park is a must to see.
The back country has some of the best hunting and fishing in
the west ... M.P.
