Additional Details:
Bridgeport became the county seat of Mono County (Mono may be a corruption of Monache, a name once applied to the Indians of the region) after the seat in Aurora was found to be in Nevada. The papers were hurriedly transferred to a tiny roadside camp that became Bridgeport. The town grew prosperous in the days when gold was plentiful. While the mines have gone, farming and tourist patronage has kept the town very much alive. Bodie State Historic Park is a must to see. The back country has some of the best hunting and fishing in the west.
