WASHINGTON MONUMENT

This was the first monument erected by
any city or state in the United States to honor
George Washington.
The cornerstone was laid July 4th, 1815 and
the monument was completed in October 1829.
The cost was over $200,000, which sum was
raised by lottery and public subscription.
The statue atop is 16 feet high, weighs 161/2
tons and was carved from one block of marble
weighing 30 tons, by Causici.
The total height of the shaft is 188 feet and
there are 228 steps to the top.
Built of white native marble, the structure
rises 280 feet above tide water and from its
top one obtains a beautiful view of the har-
bor, city and country.
