Building crowns Beacon Hill, the highest elevation on the
peninsula. and its gilded dome is a landmark of prominence.
Before it is the historic Boston Common. Beacon Street, the
Nob Hill of æsthetic Boston, extends in front of the State
House and narrowly separates the Common from the beau-
tiful Public Garden. The heroic bronze statue to General
Joseph Hooker, one-time commanader of the Army of the
Potomec, flanks the State House upon the left. In front is
the famous Shaw memorial group. 21.1.
