Wood River Dome
Representing a new era in industrial architecture
is this giant dome-structure at Wood River, III.,
which serves as a regional tank car repair plant
for the Union Tank Car Company. Big enough
to enclose a football field or a baseball park,
the all-steel Dome has a diameter of 380 feet
and rises to a height of 120 feet - as high as
a 10-story building. Along with a similar dome
that Union Tank Car has built at Baton Rouge,
La., the Wood River plant is the largest circular
building in the world without internal supports.
