New $4,000,000 Civil Courthouse, the tallest
building in the city, built of white Bedford
stone, faces the Municipal Courts Building, the
City Hall and the projected Memorial Plaza of
municipal buildings. Its predecessor, the old
Courthouse, at Broadway and Market Street, has
a romantic history. In it was waged Dred Scott's
famous fight for freedom.
