The Bancroft Tower was erected to the memory of the
Bancroft family of Worcester, Massachusetts. Aaron
Bancroft was a revolutionary soldier, clergyman and
author. His son, George (1800-1891), was born in
Worcester. A distinguished historian and statesman,
he established the Naval Academy at Annapolis when
Secretary of the Navy under President Polk. He founded
the Round Hill School at Northampton, the first serious
effort in the U.S. to elevate secondary education to
its rightful place.
