Embarcadero Plaza Fountain, San Francisco's
unconventional and massive sculpture, was
dedicated April 21, 1971 amid comments
ranging from "a work of art" to "a loath-
some monstrosity”. 30,000 gallons of water
per minute cascades over this 710-ton,
$310,000 fountain designed by Arman
Vaillancourt.
Controversial? A "masterpiece” or “idiotic
rubble"? Well, beauty is in the eye of the
beholder!
