"El Camino Real"
MAIN STREET LOOKING WEST
Nacogdoches, Texas
Main Street of Nacogdoches, shown here looking west from
Mound, was once an old Indian trail. It later became a portion
of "El Camino Real," the King's Highway, leading from the
eastern boundaries of Texas to San Antonio.
Over this route traveled La Salle, De Leon, probably Cabeza
de Vaca, St. Denis, the Spanish missionaries, Antonio Gil Y'Barbo,
the Spanish settlers, and the Anglo-Saxons from the East, who
eventually made Texas what it is today.
