DOWNTOWN
LOOKING TOWARDS SAN JACINTO PLAZA
EL PASO, TEXAS
The Plaza in the center of the city is said to
mark the spot where Juan de Oñate found a
cultivated garden in 1598. On the west side
facing the Plaza is the Mills Building — this
was the site of the Juan Maria Ponce de
Leon Home. On the east you will find the
Cortez Hotel — on the south the Plaza Motor
Hotel. This view shows Pioneer Plaza and the
old cottonwood tree "Notice Tree" used to
post public notices by early settlers
long a landmark.
