CAPE HATTERAS LIGHT-Tallest light tower (193 feet)
on the American coast and tallest brick lighthouse in the
world. This tower erected in 1870 replaced the first built
here on North Carolina coast in 1798. Its beacon warns
mariners of dreaded Diamond Shoals which extend from
the Cape's Point 13 miles seaward to the edge of the
Gulf Stream where it comes closer to North Carolina
Coast than at any other region north of Southern Florida.
