Taller than a 15-story building, the shovel weighs.
11,000,000 lbs. and uses enough electricity to furnish
power for a city of 15,000 people. It recovers for
industry and utilities quality coal that could not be
mined by any other method. The mined land is utilized
for grazing, reforestation and recreation. Operated by
Pittsburg and Midway Coal Mining Co. near Hallowell,
Kansas.
