Major Richard I. Bong shot down 40 enemy aircraft and
became the leading air ace of all time. He was killed
August 6, 1945 while testing a jet plane. He is buried
in the Poplar Cemetery.
The purpose of the Memorial is to perpetuate the memory
of Major Bong and all of the gallant servicemen of World
War II.
