THE HERO OF GETTYSBURG. The figura
of John Burns, of Gettysburg, cast in bronze, stands upon a
pedestal of native rock on the field of the first day's fight.
Over seventy years of age, John Burns shouldered his mus-
ket and offered his services He scorned advice to fight in
the woods and joined the line of battle in the open. He was
wounded in three places. His home is near by, near the
Emergency Monument.
