General of Massachusetts that you are the mother of five sons
who have died foriously on the field of battle. Ifeel how weak and
puitless must be any word of mine which should attempt to beguile
your tendering
from the grief of a lossso overwhelming. But I cannot refrain
tendering you the consolation that may be found in the
of the republic they died to save I pray that our heavenly
may assurage the anguish of your bereavement, and leave
only the cherished memory of the loved and last, and the
pride that must be yours to have laid so costly
sacrifice upon the alter of freedom
