ENSIGN.
The rank of Ensign is the first attained by a young man after
he graduates from the U. S. Naval Academy and receives his commission
as a line officer in the Navy. He starts with a pay of $1,700 a year ashore,
with an additional allowance of about $36 per month for quarters, light and
heat, and $1,870 a year for sea duty, with a 10% increase at the expiration
of each five years of service. An Ensign may command a torpedo boat, tug
or unrated ship; he may serve as aid to the commander of a squadron or
the captain of a ship, or may act as executive officer, navigator, senior
engineer or watch officer of a ship commanded by an officer of superior
rank. The Ensign (who is here shown in mess uniform) has rank equiv-
alent to that of a Second Lieutenant in the Army.
