Additional Details:
The town of Cotopaxi was named for the world's highest active volcano, 19,498 feet. Mt. Cotopaxi, in Ecuador. Mt. Cotopaxi, near the Equator, is just a few miles from the only place in the world where the latitude and the temperature both read 0 degrees. It was given this unusual name by a Portuguese immigrant, Emanual H. Saltiel who developed the Cotopaxi mine around 1877. Mr. Saltiel had mined in Ecuador and the mountain peak visible from here resembled the snow-packed volcano in Ecuador.
