LEWIS AND CLARK
SIGHTING THE PACIFIC
*N
On 16 November 1805, 18 months after leaving St. Louis, Mo.
Capt. Meriwether Lewis and Capt. Wm. Clark ended their long,
Westward journey down the beautiful Columbia river gorge by
camping near a Chinook Indian village.
Their camp was near the present town of McGowan, Wash. and
from this base they explored as far North as Long Beach, Wn.
After spending about ten days on the North bank of the river
they crossed over to the South bank, near Astoria, Oregon and
established Fort Clatsop where they spent the Winter.
