The exact number of fugitives hidden
in this cave is not known, but statements
that large numbers of Negroes were fer-
ried over the Missouri river at this
point were corroborated by old settlers
when this information was obtained in
1901. Nearly always the first trip in the
morning of John Boulware's ferry carried
a load of stolen slaves.
