Edelweiss. This white velvety flower is the desire
of every tourist and the disaster of some, for it grows
in places so steep and difficult that even chamois-hunters
themselves are shy of seeking it. It does not grow on
the lower heights of the Alps but only at altitudes higher
than 5,000 to 7,000 feet and therefore its possession is
regarded as the "hall-mark" of an Alpine climber.
