Beautiful and Historical Richmond, Va. Series
NO. 33. THE HEART OF RICHMOND, VA.
At the close of the Civil War the business sec-
tion of Richmond, embracing almost the entire
portion of the city shown in this view, was in
ashes, and its inhabitants, then numbering less
than 50,000, were impoverished. For many trying
years growth and prosperity developed slowly.
But within the last decade the city's progress,
along all lines, has been marvelous; one evidence
of which is visibly presented in this view. The
splendid buildings here shown, from left to
right, being as follows: The Travelers' Building,
Post Office Building, American National Bank
Building, Rueger's Hotel, Mutual Building, and
First National Bank, while at the extreme left
appears the famous Capitol Square. The present
population of the city, with its suburbs, is over
188,000 and in per capita wealth it ranks fourth
among the cities of the United States.
