The U. S. Navy Yard extends along the East River 2½
miles and covers an area of 144 acres. It was established
in 1803 and the first steam war ship "Fulton" was built
here in 1815. The 26,000 ton super-dreadnought "New
York' was built here in 1911-1914. The yard can be
reached by the Flushing Avenue car from the Brooklyn
Bridge.
