ERSTOWN, N.Y. IN 1839-THE INVENTION OF ABNER
DOUBLEDAY WHO WAS, IN LATER YEARS, A GENERAL
IN THE UNION FORCES IN THE CIVIL WAR.
THE NAME "BASEBALL" WAS FIRST USED IN 1845 BY
THE KNICKERBOCKER CLUB OF NEW YORK UNDER
WHOSE AUSPICES THE FIRST OFFICIAL RULES WERE
FRAMED AND THE FIRST TEAM ORGANIZED TO PRO
MOTE THE POPULARITY OF THE GAME.
