The great American game had its origin in Cooperstown, N.Y. in 1839. The invention of Abner Doubleday who was in later years a general in the Union Forces in the Civil War. The name "Baseball" was first used in 1845 by the Knickerbocker Club of New York under whose auspices the first official rules were framed and the first team organized to promote the popularity of the game.
