YOUNG AND A COMPANY OF MORMONS ARRIVED IN THE VAL-
LEY OF GREAT SALT LAKE AFTER A RIGOROUS OVERLAND
JOURNEY FROM ILLINOIS AND STARTED TO ESTABLISK AR
AGRICULTURAL COMMUNITY. THE SETTLEMENT SURVIVED
IN SPITE OF HARDSHIPS AND REVERSES. THE FIRST CROPS
VERE DEVOURED BY A PLAGUE OF CRICKETS THE NEXT
YEAR THE CRICKETS CAME AGAIN AND THE SETTLERS ABAN-
PONED HOPE. BEFORE THE FIELDS WERE ENTIRELY STRIPPED
HOWEVER, CLOUDS OF SEA GULLS ARRIVED AND, DEVOURING
THE CRICKETS, SAVED THE COMMUNITY FROM STARVARON
UTAN WAS ORGANIZED AS A TERRITORY IN 1849 ARD WAS
GOVERNED AS SUCH UNTIL IT BECAME A STATE ON JAN41896
