AVERAGE
Amid the chaos and devastation of the September 11 terrorist attacks
against America, thousands of ordinary American citizens became he-
roes, performing countless acts of remarkable bravery and exceptional
kindness, many of which will never be known. Perhaps no one em-
bodies the heroism of the average American in 2001 more powerfully
than the 33 innocent passengers and seven crew members of United
Airlines Flight 93, the fourth plane to be hijacked on that terrible Sep-
tember morning. Because the flight was delayed before takeoff, news
of what had already happened to the other hijacked planes had time to
reach Flight 93. When they realized that the hijackers meant to crash
the plane into a populated area, four particularly brave businessmen
- Todd Beamer, Mark Bingham, Tom Burnett and Jeremy Glick - de-
cided they had to take action. With the words, "Okay, let's roll," they led
MAN
a desperate midair struggle against the terrorists. Eventually, the huge
aircraft smashed into a field in Somerset County, Pennsylvania, killing
everyone aboard but injuring no one on the ground. The brave men
and women of Flight 93 had sacrificed themselves to keep the plane
- loaded with over 10,000 pounds of explosive jet fuel for its cross-
country flight and now headed straight for Washington, D.C. - from
reaching, and almost surely destroying, the hijackers' intended target
of the White House. By their selflessly courageous acts, they saved
untold lives and prevented an unthinkably horrible catastrophe from
becoming even worse. The extraordinary heroism of the passengers
and crew of Flight 93 helped reassure the nation during the uncertain
months that followed the September 11 attacks and continues to in-
spire millions of Americans to be everyday heroes in their own lives...
